The New Missionary Position

Of all the Christian and quasi-Christian groups that exist, of all the possible sects one might encounter, I think the Catholic brand remains the most consistently exasperating. Whether they’re refuting the heliocentric model, torturing Christ into infidels, or buggering acolytes, their particular model of goddishness is at once infuriatingly arrogant and laden with self-righteousness. These guys […]

Sanctity of Life? Not Once You’re Born

A favorite hobbyhorse of the Einsatzgruppen-ÜberKristians is, as we are all aware to death of, abortion. The “rights of the unborn” are so damned important to these people. It’s an extension, maybe, of their obsession on sex in general. You’re not supposed to fuck anyone until you get married, and you can only get married […]

Yeah, That’ll Keep the Kids from Turning Gay

It’s astounding sometimes how utterly duplicitous the right-wingers are. They can be completely shameless in their antics. Right now over on Pharyngula, PZ’s critique of a hypocritical loony has fomented a minor war in the comments, much of which overlooks the point of Myers’s original post: That anyone who’s white, Christian, male, making a lot of money and […]

Desperately in Need of a Shame Transfusion

Dick Cheney is a pig. Dick Cheney, US vice-president, has endorsed the use of “water boarding” for terror suspects and confirmed that the controversial interrogation technique was used on Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, the senior al-Qaeda operative now being held at Guantánamo Bay. He calls it a “no-brainer” — which it is, but not in the way […]

Pot:Kettle

Our pro-democracy reprehensibles representatives are at it again. CNN recently aired a video showing American soldiers being stalked in Iraq. It’s creepy and distressing, but when you have elected officials actively agitating for suppression of freedom of the press, you have to wonder when they’ll realize (if they’ll realize) that they’re sounding more and more like […]

War on Terror Escalates to Include Teenage Girls

The NYT tells us that a New York teenager is trying to avoid deportation to Guinea, a nation she’s not lived in since the was two years old. Part of the reason eighteen-year-old Adama Bah doesn’t want to go back is that genital mutilation of women is still a practice in Guinea. Today, at a closed hearing in Manhattan’s […]

Bush: We Must Fight the Terror Birds There, to Avoid Fighting Them Here

WASHINGTON — President George W. Bush said today that he was “gravely concerned” about intelligence reports suggesting that South America was providing sanctuary to terrorism. “I was watching that crazy beasts show on Discovery and they talked about these terror birds,” Bush said. “Did you know they eat horses? Whoo boy, I wouldn’t want to have […]

A Little Cosmic Perspective

As both a consumer and producer of SF, I confess to being enamored of the idea that there is extraterrestrial life out there. I get a kick out of the idea of Little Green Men in small, disc-shaped craft flitting happily from star to star, and I like the way SF permits us to question ourselves in ways that many […]

Brilliant!

Fundamentalist Muslim doctors are endangering their patients’ health by advising them to fast during Ramadan, which is a month long. Some devout people are apparently dying of belief. Is it possible to start a fundamentalist Christian fasting tradition?

Sex: Male; Female; Other; or Yes

Over the last few weeks I’ve collected a few blog articles that struck me as orbiting a common theme. That theme has coalesced, and I think I’m about ready to extrude it into something approximatng a tight coil of reading delight. Gender Dysmorphia It began with a post by Pam vilifying fanatics who were worried about what could happen if […]

GMO

There’s a new engineered virus that might be very effective at killing cancerous cells. But, since it’s a GMO, we can be sure that the “green” folks will do everything possible to get it banned, as they’ve done with drought– and blight-resistant crops that otherwise might have kept Africans from starving to death. Too bad stupidity isn’t consistently fatal.

悪い奴ほどよく眠る

Okay, okay, I confess to being a smart-ass. Japan’s been on my mind lately, partly because of the way North Korea’s been jacking around, and partly because some really good films have been coming from overseas. Toho, for instance, recently released a two-disc definitive DVD of Gojira (the 1954 all-Nipponese version) along with Godzilla, the 1956 redux with […]
